An Ingolstadt University monument
The museum in the baroque building of the "Alte Anatomie" (Old Anatomy; anatomical institute) of the former Bavarian University in Ingolstadt presents a treasure trove of artefacts. Early Greek, Roman and Egyptian objects are on display, as well as surgical instruments such as amputation saws, drills, cauterizing irons, cupping tools and bloodletting knives. The exhibits trace the historical development of many specialised medical disciplines, for example, ophthalmology, dentistry, obstetrics, otorhinolaryngology and medical diagnostic. Special exhibitions offer intersting insights into subjects figuring prominently in the history of medicine.
Anatomy as an academic subject
The heart of the handsome building is the former auditorium adorned by a baroque ceiling fresco. It features a collection of anatomists' teaching aids such as skeletons, specimes, illustrated anatomical tables and instruments. They provide a vivid impression of the science that since the Renaissance has helped medicine gain insight into the human body and its inner world.
